Northern Christian leaders in the All Progressives Congress urged Nigerians not to vote for any ticket that did not include Christians and Muslims in the 2023 elections. They argue that because the Muslim-Muslim ticket for the presidency was controversial, it must be rebuffed by all patriotic Nigerians.
Babachir Lawal, the formal Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chairman of the event, said colleagues within and outside the APC expressed shock at the APC's Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 general election.
Babachir Lawal said “Christians all over the country see this MM ticket as a deliberate and premeditated attempt to introduce and firmly entrench religion into the politics of this country. This, of course, will lead to further disharmony in the hitherto fragile coexistence of the Nigerian society, disrupt peace and hamper both social and economic development of the country.
Yakubu Dogara, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives who was also pressent at the even claimed that the APC wished to disintegrate Nigeria like the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. According to him, Nigeria in 2022 is not the same as Nigeria in 1993, and the APC's presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has made a fatal error of judgment.
Dogara also backed other Christian leaders on the Muslim-Muslim ticket, urging Christians to seek an alternative platform in the 2023 elections and urging Nigerians to reject any divisive tendency of individuals to divide the people.
